DUSK DANCES AT DANCING ON THE
EDGE Dusk Dances is Free!!
Host: Tara Cheyenne
Friedenberg
Dusk Dances is an outdoor dance event that brings
an array of high quality contemporary and traditional dance to public
parks. As dusk descends, a theatrical host ushers the audience - which
invariably includes children, dog walkers and local residents - to four
eclectic dance pieces that unfold in different areas of the park.
Audiences are invited on a pay-what-you-can basis to an innovative
site-specific festival, which is not only an artistic event, but a
social and cultural one as well.
With a bold vision to
bring dance into the lap of an urban community, our mandate as producers
is to make dance accessible physically (our venue is a public space),
financially (admission is pay what you can), and artistically (our
programming is diverse, for all tastes and ages). As presenters,
our mandate is to give choreographers a unique opportunity to create a
site-specific dance piece, and to showcase their work in a
non-traditional dance venue, in front of a large and mostly new
audience. This year, The Carnival Band will open each evening's festivities. The
Carnival Band is a community music project with ten years of history,
based out of Commercial Drive’s Britannia Community Centre. Musical
direction is provided by Ross Barrett and Tim Sars.
Instrumentation for the band includes all range of brass,
woodwinds, drums, percussion, accordions, and of course voice. Stage
shows also allow us the opportunity to join our bass, guitar, fiddle,
banjo, piano, and keyboard playing friends.
Many of our
favourite tunes are originals by band members. The remainder of our
monstrous repertoire includes samba, calypso, swing, afrobeat, jazz,
funk, disco, and traditional music from around the globe. They
believe that community music is grounded in collaboration, with the aim
of empowering the individuals involved. Songs and performances are a
means to creative expression and community cohesiveness, rather than an
end in themselves.

The Contingency
Plan |
Strathcona High, Class of ‘56
Strathcona High Class of ’56 explores the sexual repression of the
1950‘s, taking the audience on an emotionally tumultuous journey. This
quirky piece introduces you to three teenage girls, clad in perfect
pastel dresses and giddy with excitement as they arrive at their high
school prom. These three characters are emotionally enthusiastic,
vulnerable and volatile. As the piece unfolds, the young women abandon
their aspirations of love, embracing a fierce independence with
reckless abandon.
The Contingency Plan is a collective of
three contemporary dancers, Vanessa Goodman, Jane Osborne and Leigha
Wald, who met while pursuing degrees in dance at Simon Fraser
University. Our mandate is to integrate communities by creating an
opportunity for audiences to fully engage in work that is honest and
sincere. As a collective we are committed to the versatility required
for contemporary performance and as such seek ongoing opportunities to
further develop and diversify our craft.

One
Couch
Finding themselves in the confined area of a small couch, three
strangers work together to negotiate life in their close quarters. As
the trio reinvents their common space, the couch turns, shifts, and
transforms into a world in which these three individuals learn to
coexist. “…high-energy fun all the way.” -Michael Crabb, CBC Radio.
This
piece premiered at Dusk Dances Withrow Park in 2009, and was made
possible with the generous support of Dusk Dances and the Toronto Arts
Council.
