Company Bio
Karen
Jamieson Dance was formed in 1983 with the vision to challenge the
boundaries of contemporary dance in Canada. Karen Jamieson is
nationally recognized for her role in the growth of Canadian
contemporary dance and her leadership role in the development of
community engaged and cross cultural dance. Focus of the company
is dance as a mythic language exploring the tension between form and
energy, the tipping point between structure and raw emotion. Using both
creation and performance, Karen Jamieson uncovers a poetic, archetypal
language through dance. The power of contemporary dance transcends
cultures, languages, histories and traditions by connecting us all at a
very primal level. The award winning company has created over 78
original dance works with scores by over 20 esteemed Canadian
composers, performed in Canada, Europe, Japan and the United States.
The 1983 work, “Sisyphus” was named one of the 10 Canadian
choreographic masterworks of the 20th century and the multi-year work
with the Haida village of Skidegate BC and with the residents of
Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside were recognized nationally as
groundbreaking in the field of community engaged and cross cultural
dance. Location:
Carnegie Community Centre, Main Street, Sunrise Market Roof
