Tiger Princess Dance Projects

Wéi navigates connection and belonging to everywhere and nowhere. Exploring how a group can ‘write’ a cohesive dance/story together on stage which begins with two questions: What makes us who we are? When do we become us? Is it memory (biological) or is it imitation (experience) or is it all preordained and our fate is set? Or perhaps it is about interactions within the group and as we work and play the political dynamic is what gives us direction and makes us who we are. How do we connect? How do we know when we’ve made a connection? There are many fleeting moments when we become who we are as individuals and times when we truly and deeply connect with others.

Yvonne Ng | Born & raised in Singapore, of Peranakan Chinese descent, Yvonne Ng |黄碧琬, B.F.A., M.A.(York University), is the founder, artistic director, choreographer, presenter & arts educator of princess productions (since 1996), which houses tiger princess dance projects and the biennial dance: made in canada/fait au canada Festival (2001). The company’s repertoire includes Yvonne’s works and commissioned works, creating original roles for Bill James, José Navas, Dominique Dumais, Kevin O’Day, Marie-Josée Chartier, Robert Glumbek, Stephanie Skura, Deborah Hay and Tedd Robinson to name a few. tiger princess dance projects has toured to Singapore, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Australia, China, Canada and the USA. Between 1998 and 2019, the company has garnered thirty-six Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations for performance and choreography. Yvonne won a Dora Mavor Moore Award for best performance (ensemble). Yvonne is also a certified Open Source Forms© and Dance for Dementia (Baycrest NBS Sharing Dance) teacher, with training in Partners for Youth Empowerment, Dance for PD™ and functional anatomy with Irene Dowd. Yvonne is the recipient of 2022 Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in Performing Arts (Canada Council), 2017 Muriel Sherrin Award (Toronto Arts Foundation), Jacqueline Lemieux Award (Canada Council), K.M. Hunter Artist Award, New Pioneers Arts Award, Chalmers Arts Fellowship, Soulpepper’s Community Artist Award and Ontario Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts – New Talent. Composer: Nick Storring

Nick Storring | Award-winning composer Nick Storring creates scores for performers but has also generated a body of multi-layered recorded work consisting of his own performances on a wide and largely acoustic variety of instruments. He has collaborated with a number of leading artists and organizations in contemporary music including Montréal’s AKOUSMA Festival, Oxford UK’s Audiograft Festival, the Esprit Orchestra, Arraymusic, Soundstreams, Eve Egoyan, Thin Edge New Music Collective, Quatuor Bozzini and Vancouver New Music. His recordings have appeared on acclaimed experimental music imprints such as Orange Milk, Notice Recordings and Entr’acte. Storring’s interest in parallel art-forms has translated into several film and theatre scores as well as collaborations with choreographers such as Yvonne Ng, Deepti Gupta, and Brandy Leary. His music for ‘ambient gaming environment’ Tentacle was mounted with the work at the Museum of Modern Art.

Lighting Designer: Nic Vincent

Nic is a lighting designer based out of Brooklyn, NY and Toronto, Canada. He designs for theatre, dance, opera, film, and everything in-between. Recent off-broadway includes; Lincoln Center Theater LCT 3, Roundabout, Atlantic, 59E59, New Ohio, and New York Live Arts. Other Credits include BONEZ, Thurgood (People’s Light); The Indigo Room (Under the Radar / La Mama); Wéi 成为 (Aki Studio / Tiger Princess Dance); Wolf Play, Everybody, Constellations (Brown / Trinity Rep); NIGHTGOWNS (Sasha Velour / Quibi); El Huracán (Yale Repertory Theatre / The Sol Project); All the Lonely Women, DirectorJam (Rattlestick). Performers:

Johanna Bergfelt a native of Sweden, graduated from The Royal Swedish Ballet School in 1989. Since coming to Canada in 2000, Johanna has worked with many independent choreographers and companies. Apart from performing, Johanna teaches regularly at different places in the city, and rehearsal directs. Johanna has worked with the company since 2013.

Irvin Chow graduated with a BFA in Dance at York University. He has worked with tiger princess dance projects since 2012, with both dance projects and teaching projects. He is excited to be performing in Vancouver in this reiteration of Wéi.

Mairéad Filgate (Toronto/Montreal) is a performer, choreographer, and researcher. She is excited by her recent collaborations with Shannon Litzenberger, Roshanak Jaberi & Karen Kaeja, Marie-Claire Forté, and Ron Mann; her ongoing project collecting oral histories of the Danny Grossman Dance Company; and her outdoor site-specific choreographic research. Mairéad has worked with the company since 2009.

Sully Malaeb Proulx (he/they) is a French Canadian-Lebanese freelance dance artist based in Toronto. As an alum of the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase, Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, London Contemporary Dance School, and Springboard Danse Montréal, Sully has had the utter privilege of performing works, locally and abroad, by artists from near and far.

Kathia Wittenborn is a Toronto & Montreal-based dance artist and movement teacher. Kathia has trained, created and performed throughout North America and Europe; collaborating with various artists and companies including, most recently, Marie Lambin Gagnon, Shannon Litzenberger, Sharon B. Moore, Sashar Zarif and JD Dance. Her work in Peter Chin’s Woven received a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Performance.
